I recently decided to have more time for prayer in my day. This isn’t the only time I pray. But, I thought instead of always listening to the radio in my car, I would spend some extra time in prayer. (Considering I’m a Fox News fan, this would mean giving up some of that time!)
So I have put in some CD’s and spent some extra time in prayer, praise, and worship. One of the CD’s I am listening to is a CD with hymns. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love some of the newer songs we sing in our services! The faith proclaimed in a song like “Do it Again”, when it says, “Your promise still stands…You’ve never failed me yet!” Or, what about when we sing “You thought I was worth saving…You thought I was to die for…so I can be free, so I can be whole, so I can tell everyone I know…” Those words have to touch your heart. I was also thinking to several years back when Bill Gaither wrote songs like “Because He Lives” and Jesus, There’s Just Something About That Name”. Those songs still give us hope and faith!
But, when it comes to the Hymns – there is so much power in those words that have come down through the years! Songs like “Blessed Assurance Jesus is Mine.” Or, what about “Peace, Peace, Wonderful Peace”? Jesus doesn’t just bring peace, He is our peace! And maybe my favorite, “Great is Thy Faithfulness – strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow!”
No matter what the style or our personal preference, there is so much power in music! Psalm 92:2-3 states, “To proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.”
So, lift your voice and sing! It will lift a heavy heart and bring joy to your day!
