Yet… I Will Rejoice

Recently a young friend gave me a plaque for the wall that says, “Be a stiletto in a room full of flats.” Obviously, she knew my love for shoes! But let’s be honest. There are some really cute “flats” out there. And I actually have some!

But that word “flat” has a lot of different meanings. In music, it can mean singing flat or out of tune. But if you flat the seventh note in a chord, it can be really beautiful.

Sometimes we also say a beverage has gone “flat,” like when you are drinking a Coke and the fizz is gone. It just doesn’t taste right!

So this is what being a stiletto in a room full of flats means to me. We are coming to the end of one of the most difficult years of our lives. It has been easy to be “out of tune” in our attitudes.

For some of us, the “fizz” is just not there. Maybe it’s time to look for ways to do something different, to stand out, and to make a difference. While we may not always be “dazzling,” maybe it’s time to do something new in our spiritual lives. Maybe it’s reading the Bible through again, or getting up a little earlier to spend time in prayer.

Maybe it’s finding new ways to serve in our church or maybe looking for ways to share our faith with unbelievers. Whatever it is, let’s not be afraid to be bold in doing something new for the Kingdom of God, maybe even something we have never tried before!
