Making Room for God

About a month ago, knowing that a new year was coming, I started on my project of cleaning out my closets. This is something I do once a year. And while it is so much work, it is such a good feeling when I finish. You know the drill. If you haven’t used it in a year or more, it’s time to get rid of it.

Now, my husband says that I am just making room to bring in more stuff! Not true! But there’s a spiritual application here.

We are at the beginning of a brand-new-year. That’s always an exciting time. I want to examine my heart and move anything out that should not be there and make more room for God in my life. What are the things in my heart that I can “move out?”

While there can be a lot of different things, two really stand out to me.

I want to move out any wrong attitudes. With all that God does for me on a daily basis, my heart should be full of gratitude, not ungratefulness. And what about leftover disappointments from the past? Disappointments can lead to bitterness and that is something I definitely do not want in my heart.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalm 139:23

At the beginning of this year, let’s search our hearts, get rid of the clutter, and make more room for God’s love in our hearts.
