The Practical Side of God

There’s a really interesting story in 2 Kings 6:1-6. The Sons of the Prophets told Elisha that they needed more space to live. They headed to the Jordan to cut down trees and asked Elisha to go with them. And he agreed to go.

As they were cutting down trees, the axe head fell into the water. The problem was, it had been borrowed. Elisha asked where it fell and he threw a stick in the water. The iron axe floated, so the axe could be returned to the owner. And as far as I can see, this story was never mentioned again.

Now, I wonder why God would have this little, kind of insignificant story, included in the Bible. I mean the Old Testament is full of so many amazing miracles!

There’s the story of Moses parting the Red Sea, David bringing down Goliath, and the walls of Jericho falling down. And that’s just the beginning. But finding a lost axe in the water? I mean it is a miracle but not necessarily earth-shaking.

Could it be possible that it is there just to remind us that the God who spoke the world into existence cares about the day-to-day things in our lives? Does He really care when we mess up or lose something? I’m not sure, but I think that could very well be the reason He included this story.

God loves us so much and He cares about every detail of our lives. And I just have to believe He included this story to remind us of that! I’m so glad I serve a God who cares about the little things as well as the big ones!
